On December 25, 2025, Embrace Refugees BC Society hosted a heartwarming community event titled Dine and Shine, bringing together seniors for a day of connection, learning, and celebration. Held in the spirit of togetherness, the event created a safe and joyful space for seniors to share experiences, learn from one another, and celebrate culture through food, movement, and storytelling.
The gathering focused on two important and closely connected themes: diet and resettlement. Many seniors in attendance shared their lived experiences of adjusting to Canadian food systems after resettlement. Participants openly discussed the challenges of navigating unfamiliar ingredients, changing eating habits, and maintaining cultural food practices while trying to eat healthy in a new country. These conversations highlighted both the resilience of seniors and the importance of culturally relevant nutrition support.
A key highlight of the event was the guest speaker, Ms. Magagula, who delivered an engaging and practical talk on “Africanizing” Canadian foods. Drawing from her own experience, she demonstrated how commonly available Canadian foods can be prepared in ways that reflect African cooking styles, flavors, and traditions—without compromising health. Ms. Magagula encouraged participants to view food adaptation not as a loss of culture, but as an opportunity to creatively blend traditions. She emphasized the importance of balanced diets, portion control, and staying physically active as part of healthy aging.

The workshop component of Dine and Shine allowed participants to put these ideas into practice. Seniors worked together to prepare meals, sharing techniques, recipes, and tips along the way. The kitchen became a space of laughter, learning, and mutual support, reinforcing the idea that food is not only nourishment, but also a powerful connector of people and cultures.
Beyond cooking, the day was filled with dance, music, and storytelling. Participants took time to move their bodies, celebrate familiar rhythms, and share personal stories from their journeys of resettlement. These moments of joy and reflection strengthened social bonds and reminded everyone of the healing power of community.
Dine and Shine was more than a workshop—it was a celebration of resilience, cultural pride, and healthy living. Embrace Refugees BC Society remains committed to creating inclusive spaces where seniors feel seen, heard, and supported as they continue to navigate life in Canada. As one participant shared, “Today reminded us that even in a new place, our culture, our food, and our joy can still shine.
