Storytelling has always been the heartbeat of African communication. Long before microphones and cameras, our people gathered around the fire or under a mango tree to share lessons, laughter, and hope. Those stories carried wisdom — and they healed the spirit.
Today, that same spirit lives on among refugees in British Columbia. Sharing stories helps transform pain into power. It helps people remember who they are, and how far they’ve come. One member put it simply and powerfully:
“All the challenges I faced at least taught me something.”
Through storytelling, we celebrate resilience — turning struggle into strength, and silence into voice.
A Night to Remember
On October 12th, our community came together for an unforgettable evening of storytelling, poetry, and cultural expression. We were honored to welcome Adjoua Flora Cynthia Kra’, a guest performer and Afro-Diversity leader who travelled from Ontario to share her art and wisdom with us.
Her voice filled the room with energy, resilience, and love. Through poetry and rhythm, Adjoua Flora reminded us of the power of solidarity — how we rise together when we honor our shared stories. The audience joined in dancing and celebration, their hearts connected by the rhythm of Africa.

United Through Collaboration
This beautiful gathering was made possible through the partnership and support of:
Embrace Refugees BC Society, African Canada Education Foundation, Festival International Afro et Diversité, The Black Star, and the Togolese Cultural Association of BC.
Together, we created a space of healing, joy, and cultural pride — a reminder that our stories connect us, across borders and generations.
Our Stories Continue
From the firesides of our ancestors to the community halls of British Columbia, storytelling remains our bridge — a way to heal, to teach, and to build belonging.
At Embrace Refugees BC Society, we continue to nurture that tradition by creating spaces where every voice matters. Through stories, we rise together — stronger, wiser, and united.
